More northbound stacks
Q124 is seen here just south of Montezuma having just met 2 southbounds at Dooly. The lead GE unit, a GE wide cab, has experienced engine troubles (Surprise!!!) and is dead. The trailing EMD is providing all the power. The crew of Q124 talked with the mechanical department in Jacksonville to no avail. They were moving slowly when I took this pic as they were climbing a grade but soon picked up speed as they crested the hill. An exasperated dispatcher said he would see what he could do about finding a locomotive for them. The train was 4000ft long but only 2400 tons so it must have been mostly empties. The crew said they could make it...slowly...until they got to Rupert where they said they didn't know if they would be able to make the grades between Rupert and Mauk.
