Album Info:Today I came upon a most sad sight. While taking the long way back from a trip to Albany GA I passed through Dawson GA to see if anything interesting was to be found on the GSWR. As I neared the old CofG depot I nearly became sickened at the sight of the depot being torn down. 7 or 8 workers swarmed all over it ripping boards and roofing off. In 1981 when I was training as a clerk/operator for Southern Railway, this depot was one of the first I trained at. To now see it meeting it's demise was truly heart breaking. My understanding is the GSWR is tearing it down so as to build an office. I am saddened that they didn't renovate the old depot rather than tear it down. The workers that were tearing it down all pretty much agreed it was still a solid building. The were salvaging some very fine lumber from it. I am sorry that in this day and time of increased awareness of historical items that something like this can happen. We are slowly loosing our railroad heritage to short-sighted progress. It is also a reminder to all of us to get your pictures of these old relics at every opportunity. Again, a very sad day for all of us......
