Chattahoochee Bay local |
Description: |
The Chattahoochee Bay local passes over it's namesake Chattahoochee River as they leave Georgia and enter Alabama with a pair of Bayline GP40-2's in the classic yellow/green paint scheme. The new trestle over the Chattahoochee River at Alaga is only a few years old in this photo. The old trestle was replaced to make way for improvements to nearby U.S. 84. The northbound has just stopped at Saffold and is rolling toward Dothan/Montgomery. |

New train and old depot |
Description: |
The light was fading as I grabbed this photo of a northbound empty grain train from the overpass in Ideal GA. The old depot, new train, and fall colors make for some nice pics. Just hopefully in better light the next time. |

CofG local from Albany GA to Dothan AL |
Description: |
The Southern takeover of the CofG is evident in this 1969 look at the Dothan district local using tuxedo scheme power lettered for the Central of Georgia. This is the route that used spacer cars, seen here, due to weight restrictions over the Chattahoochee River trestle which is only 2 miles west of the location where this photo was taken. The coming of the Farley Nuclear plant near Columbia and the heavy loads destined to it would make a new trestle necessary and in a few years after this picture was taken it would be in place and would end the need for the spacer cars. |

Oly meets new in the depot |
Description: |
This photo shows the contrast in old meeting new in the!old CofG depot in Madison. By this time Southern had taken over but many features of the CofG days were still evident. The computer I am using represents the newer technology being used while just to my right hangs the dispatchers line which still used a phone that probably dates back to the Second World War. Train order pads and rotary dial phones complete the scene. As a personal aside, the watch I am wearing in this photo is the watch I still wear today. I bought it in 1981 and it is still keeping perfect time. |
